Recover Movement. Rebuild Confidence. Get Back to Life.

— About This Condition
Whiplash can leave you with neck pain, stiffness, headaches and difficulty with everyday movement. At KVP, our experienced physiotherapists provide comprehensive assessment, hands-on treatment and progressive rehabilitation.
Whiplash is an acceleration–deceleration injury that occurs when the head and neck are rapidly forced backwards and forwards, most commonly during a motor vehicle accident. Symptoms may develop immediately or become more noticeable in the hours or days following the injury.
Whiplash can affect more than the muscles and joints of your neck — some people experience headaches, dizziness, altered balance, arm symptoms or difficulty coordinating head and eye movements. At KVP, we consider the broader effects of whiplash so your rehabilitation targets what’s contributing to your symptoms—not simply where it hurts.
— RECOGNISE THE SIGNS

Pain and restricted movement through the neck.

A noticeable reduction in how far you can comfortably turn or tilt your neck.

Headaches that develop following the injury, often linked to the neck.

Pain extending into the shoulders or upper back.

Tightness or spasm through the neck and shoulder muscles

A feeling of dizziness or being off-balance following the injury.

Symptoms radiating into the arm, including tingling or numbness.

Tiredness or reduced concentration that can accompany whiplash.
— WHY EARLY ASSESSMENT MATTERS
No two whiplash injuries are the same. At KVP, your physiotherapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to understand your injury, identify the factors contributing to your symptoms and determine the most appropriate pathway for recovery.

— Our Treatment Approach
Treatment may include manual therapy and joint mobilisation, soft-tissue treatment, dry needling where appropriate, neck mobility exercises, progressive neck and upper-body strengthening, deep neck muscle and motor-control retraining, balance and sensorimotor rehabilitation where indicated, postural and ergonomic advice, and graded return to driving, work, exercise and sport.

Prolonged rest can contribute to stiffness, weakness and reduced confidence — we help gradually restore comfortable neck movement at a pace appropriate for your stage of recovery.

Joint mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques and dry needling combined with targeted mobility exercises, used alongside — not instead of — active rehabilitation.

Progressive strengthening of the deep neck muscles, cervical spine, shoulders and upper back to improve strength, endurance and movement control.

Assessment of balance, proprioception and head-eye coordination, with targeted exercises incorporated where appropriate.

Progressively preparing you for the demands of driving, work, the gym and sport, based on your recovery and functional goals.

Some temporary activity modification may be appropriate, but prolonged rest is generally not the goal. Gradually restoring comfortable movement and activity is an important part of recovery.
Headaches are common following whiplash and can be associated with the neck and upper cervical region. Your physiotherapist can assess potential musculoskeletal contributors and incorporate these findings into your treatment.
Yes. Some people experience dizziness, unsteadiness or altered balance following whiplash. Where indicated, we can assess balance, proprioception and other sensorimotor factors as part of your rehabilitation.
Yes. Imaging can identify certain structural injuries, but it doesn't tell us everything about how your neck is moving and functioning.
Physiotherapy assesses movement, strength, muscle control, neurological function and, where appropriate, balance and sensorimotor function.
Not everyone with whiplash requires imaging. Your physiotherapist will assess your presentation and, if further investigation or medical review is appropriate, guide you accordingly.
Recovery varies depending on the injury and individual presentation. Many people progressively improve with appropriate education, movement and rehabilitation, while more complex injuries may require a longer recovery period.
