— About This Condition

Expert Physiotherapy for Herniated & Bulging Discs

A diagnosis of a bulging or herniated disc can feel overwhelming, particularly if you’re experiencing severe back pain, sciatica, numbness or weakness. While these symptoms can be distressing, the good news is that most disc injuries recover successfully without surgery. Research consistently shows that the majority of people improve with the right combination of education, appropriate exercise, gradual return to activity and time.

At Kenmore Village Physio, our experienced physiotherapists provide comprehensive assessment and evidence-based treatment for bulging discs, herniated discs and other disc-related spinal conditions. Every rehabilitation program is tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle and recovery goals because no two disc injuries are exactly the same.

Our focus is simple—to reduce pain, restore movement, rebuild confidence and help you return safely to work, sport and the activities you enjoy.

Understanding Disc Injuries

The terms bulging disc, herniated disc, prolapsed disc and “slipped disc” are often used interchangeably, but they describe slightly different changes within the spinal disc.

arrow

Bulging Disc

The disc extends beyond its normal boundaries while the outer layer remains intact.

arrow

Herniated Disc

Part of the disc's soft inner material pushes through a tear in the outer layer and may irritate nearby spinal nerves.

"Slipped Disc"

Although commonly used, this term isn't medically accurate—spinal discs don't actually slip out of place.

Many people also have disc changes visible on MRI without experiencing any pain. This is why your symptoms and physical examination are often far more important than the scan itself when determining the most appropriate treatment.

— COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT. ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS

Understanding What's Really Causing Your Pain

Successful treatment begins with understanding exactly what is causing your pain.

Although MRI scans may identify a disc bulge or herniation, imaging alone rarely tells the full story. Many people have disc changes without pain, while others experience significant symptoms from relatively small injuries.

The size of a disc bulge on MRI doesn’t necessarily determine how much pain someone experiences. Some people have large disc bulges without symptoms, while others experience significant pain from relatively small changes. That’s why we focus on treating the person—not just the scan.

Our physiotherapists perform a detailed clinical assessment to determine whether your symptoms are coming from the injured disc itself, an irritated spinal nerve, surrounding joints, muscles, ligaments or other spinal structures. Back pain is often influenced by more than one structure, so identifying the primary source of your symptoms is essential for developing the right treatment plan.

How We Treat Disc-Related Back Pain

Disc injuries don’t simply require pain relief — they require the right rehabilitation at the right time. At Kenmore Village Physio, we combine current evidence with years of clinical experience to guide every stage of your recovery, individually progressed as your symptoms improve.

one

Pain Relief & Early Recovery

Hands-on physiotherapy, movement strategies that reduce nerve irritation, advice on sitting/sleeping/everyday activities, and activity modification — rather than prolonged bed rest, which isn't recommended.

two

Personalised Exercise Rehabilitation

Directional movement exercises where appropriate, mobility exercises, core endurance and spinal stability training, hip and lower limb strengthening, and progressive return to lifting, work, recreation and sport.

three

Education That Empowers You

Practical advice on understanding your diagnosis, safe lifting and bending, workstation setup, returning to exercise, managing flare-ups and long-term spinal health.

Understanding Flare-Ups

Experiencing a flare-up during recovery doesn't necessarily mean you've caused further damage to your spine. Temporary increases in pain are common and often reflect increased sensitivity rather than a new injury. Understanding how to respond early can often reduce the severity and duration of symptoms while helping you stay active with confidence. Our goal isn't simply to treat today's pain — it's to give you the knowledge and confidence to keep your spine healthy long after your symptoms have resolved.

Disc Bulge & Herniation Questions Answered

Yes. Most bulging and herniated discs improve without surgery. Physiotherapy helps guide recovery by reducing pain, restoring movement, improving strength and supporting a gradual return to normal activities.

Not always. Many disc injuries can be accurately assessed through a detailed history and physical examination. MRI is generally reserved for severe symptoms, significant weakness, suspected serious pathology or when recovery isn't progressing as expected.

For many people, yes. Walking is a low-impact activity that helps maintain movement, reduce stiffness and support recovery. Your physiotherapist will advise how much walking is appropriate for your stage of rehabilitation.

Recovery varies depending on the severity of the injury and individual factors. Many people notice significant improvement within several weeks, while more severe injuries involving nerve irritation may take several months.

Most people won't. Surgery is generally considered only when significant nerve compression causes progressive weakness, bowel or bladder changes, or when symptoms don't improve despite appropriate conservative treatment.

Most disc injuries improve without surgery, but seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Numbness around the groin or saddle area
  • Rapidly worsening weakness in your leg or foot
  • Difficulty walking due to increasing weakness
  • Severe back pain following significant trauma
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss or persistent night pain with back pain

These symptoms may indicate a more serious condition that requires urgent medical assessment.

One of the most valuable aspects of physiotherapy is learning how to confidently manage your back.

Throughout your rehabilitation we'll provide practical advice on:

  • Understanding your diagnosis
  • Safe lifting and bending techniques
  • Workstation and ergonomic setup
  • Returning to exercise and the gym
  • Managing flare-ups
  • Long-term spinal health and injury prevention

Experiencing a flare-up during recovery doesn't necessarily mean you've caused further damage to your spine. Temporary increases in pain are common and often reflect increased sensitivity rather than a new injury. Understanding how to respond early can often reduce the severity and duration of symptoms while helping you stay active with confidence.
