— About This Condition

What Is Shoulder Impingement?

Shoulder pain can make even the simplest daily activities difficult. Whether you’re reaching overhead, working, training at the gym, playing sport or simply trying to sleep comfortably, persistent shoulder pain can have a significant impact on your lifestyle.

Shoulder impingement, often referred to as rotator cuff-related shoulder pain, is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. Although many people describe it as something being “pinched”, shoulder pain is often influenced by changes in strength, movement and the way the shoulder responds to load.

At Kenmore Village Physio, every recovery begins with understanding why your shoulder has become painful. Through expert assessment, accurate diagnosis and personalised rehabilitation, we identify the factors contributing to your symptoms and develop an evidence-based recovery plan tailored to your goals.

Understanding Shoulder Impingement

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body and relies on the coordinated function of the rotator cuff muscles, shoulder blade (scapula) and surrounding muscles to move efficiently. Rather than a single structure being "pinched", shoulder pain often develops when the shoulder is exposed to more load than it can currently tolerate or when changes in strength, movement and control place increased stress on the rotator cuff and surrounding tissues. This is why two people with similar symptoms often require very different rehabilitation programs.

— WHY EARLY ASSESSMENT MATTERS

The Right Rehabilitation Begins with the Right Diagnosis

Many shoulder conditions present with similar symptoms, including rotator cuff tendinopathy, bursitis, shoulder impingement, partial rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder and AC joint irritation. Identifying the source of your pain is essential to guiding the right treatment and achieving the best outcome.

— YOUR RECOVERY JOURNEY

A Staged Path Back to Full Movement

Following your assessment, we’ll develop a personalised recovery plan tailored to your injury, lifestyle and goals.

Restore Comfort & Movement

Our early focus is to reduce pain, restore movement and help you regain confidence using your shoulder. Your rehabilitation may include:

• Education and activity modification
• Restoring shoulder mobility
• Manual therapy where clinically appropriate
• Early exercise therapy

Rebuild Strength & Control

As your shoulder improves, rehabilitation progresses to restore strength, movement and shoulder function. Your rehabilitation may include:

• Progressive rotator cuff strengthening
• Scapular control and movement retraining
• Progressive loading
• Functional exercise progression

Return to normal daily life

The final stage prepares you for the activities that matter most.Your rehabilitation may include:

• Return-to-work planning
• Return to the gym or sport
• Functional strength testing
• Injury prevention strategies

Do I Need a Scan or Surgery?

Not necessarily. Most people with shoulder impingement or rotator cuff-related shoulder pain recover successfully with a structured physiotherapy rehabilitation program and do not require surgery. Where clinically indicated, we can advise whether imaging or specialist review is appropriate and work collaboratively with your GP or orthopaedic specialist to ensure you receive the right care at the right time.
