— About This Condition

What Is A Meniscus Tear?

A meniscus tear is one of the most common knee injuries and can occur during sport, work or even everyday activities. Whether you’ve twisted your knee on the sporting field or developed gradual knee pain over time, an accurate diagnosis is the first step towards successful recovery.

At Kenmore Village Physio, we believe every successful recovery begins with understanding your injury. Through expert assessment and evidence-based rehabilitation, we develop an individual recovery plan designed around your symptoms, lifestyle and goals—helping you return confidently to work, sport and everyday life.

The menisci are two crescent-shaped pieces of cartilage that sit between the thigh bone and shin bone. They act as shock absorbers, help distribute load across the knee and contribute to stability and smooth joint movement.

Meniscus tears may occur suddenly following a twisting injury or develop gradually through age-related changes. While some tears may require surgical review, many people recover successfully with structured physiotherapy rehabilitation.

— WHY EARLY ASSESSMENT MATTERS

The Right Rehabilitation Begins with the Right Diagnosis

Not every meniscus tear requires surgery, and not every painful knee is caused by a meniscus tear. Every knee injury begins with an expert assessment.

At Kenmore Village Physio, we take the time to identify exactly which structures have been injured, determine the severity of your condition and develop a rehabilitation plan tailored to your individual needs.

Your assessment may include:

— YOUR RECOVERY JOURNEY

A Staged Path Back to Full Movement

Many meniscus injuries can be successfully managed with physiotherapy, helping patients avoid surgery while restoring strength, confidence and function.

Your rehabilitation program is tailored to your injury, your lifestyle and your goals, progressing through each stage of recovery using current evidence and objective clinical milestones.

Phase One — Restore Comfort & Movement

The early focus is on settling the knee and restoring normal movement. This may include:

• Pain and swelling management
• Restoring knee range of motion
• Improving walking mechanics
• Gentle muscle activation
• Education and activity modification

Phase Two — Rebuild Strength & Stability

As symptoms improve, rehabilitation progresses towards restoring the strength and control required for everyday activities. Your rehab may include:

• Progressive strengthening
• Balance and proprioception training
• Functional movement retraining
• Improving lower limb control
• Building confidence through movement

Phase Three — Return to normal daily life

The final stage prepares you for the demands of work, recreation and sport. This may include:

• Running progression
• Agility and change-of-direction training
• Squatting and lifting mechanics
• Sport-specific rehabilitation
• Functional testing before returning to activity
• Injury prevention strategies

Our goal isn't simply to reduce your pain—it's to help you move confidently and reduce the risk of future knee problems.

Do All Meniscus Tears Need Surgery?

No. Many meniscus tears improve significantly with structured physiotherapy rehabilitation and do not require surgery. However, surgery may be recommended in some situations, including:

• A knee that is locked and unable to straighten
• Certain traumatic tears in younger patients
• Large or displaced tears affecting knee function
• Persistent symptoms despite appropriate rehabilitation

If further investigation is required, we can work closely with your GP and orthopaedic specialist to ensure you receive the most appropriate care while continuing to support your rehabilitation.
